Apple Varieties

Listed in the order of ripening from the end of August to end of September:

Redfree

A medium-size round firm sweet juicy red summer apple that we pick when ripe around August 20th. Those we don't eat, we store in the cooler for customers looking for an early season sweet eating apple. Great for eating out of hand. Will keep only a few weeks before softening.

Jonafree

A semi-sweet glossy-red apple having the creamy golden flesh of a Jonathan but slightly less acidic. No hint of mealiness even when fully ripe. Excellent for eating out of hand and good for pies, sauces, and salads. Can be picked September 8th until September 20th. Will keep several months.

Liberty

A beautiful medium-sized bluish-pinkish red apple with a crisp white flesh. It has a bright sprightly semi-sweet somewhat acidic flavor reminiscent of its parent Macoun. Makes a first-prize winning apple pie and a pink apple sauce that beats all others. Can be picked September 15th until September 30th. Keeps for 4 to 6 weeks when picked early although for sauce the flavor peaks at the end of the season.

Scarlet O'Hara

A large mostly red apple that is sweet like a Gala but with a fuller flavor. Flesh is crisp, sweet and aromatic. Excellent for eating and salads. Can be picked mid-September until we run out of them. We are told they will keep several months in refrigerated storage.

Crimson Crisp

A very crisp, dark red apple that is quite sweet and aromatic when fully ripe. Our trees are only beginning to bear this crop so we don't have a lot of them. In fact, a few people snatch these up quickly and store them for the winter's eating.
